I am going to go out on a limb here and talk about something that may get me labeled....and may make you wonder why I would be talking about this now and oon a blog about cottages...Ghosts...and the paranormal....
Well the reason is, I saw what I describe as a ghost at the cottage some years ago, and for some reason, that image has been 'haunting' me lately. Not sure why. It was several years ago, my wife and my parents were with me at the cottage. We all turned in for bed probably around midnight. My wife and I in our bedroom and the folks next door in theirs.
I'm a sound sleeper. Period. It takes two alarms and my wife shaking me to get my up in the morning. I am blessed with the ability to go to sleep anywhere anytime and in a matter of minutes, if not seconds. Once I am asleep, don't look for me until the morning. I am also not a person to dream. I do enough of that in the daytime. Actually, I think we all dream, but I don't know I am dreaming or remember my dreams...That's what made the following so strange for me.
On the night I described, I awoke around 2:00 a.m. and my eyes opened in the dark of the bedroom. Glancing at the wind up clock on the bedside table I could see that it was the middle of the night. I wondered what on earth woke me. My wife was sound asleep beside me, her breath coming in long relaxing sighs, obviously in a deep sleep.
As I lay there in the bed, and my eyes became accustomed to the darkness, I clearly saw a shape at the foot of the bed. A person, who looked like an older woman, leaning over the bed, looking at my wife. I froze...at first I thought, could it be my mother who was sleeping in the next room, checking on us for some reason? The 'person' continued to look at my wife, so I spoke, probably saying something like "Who's there?"
The shape turned towards me, deliberately, and I couldn't make out the features until her head lifted up and her eyes caught my own. I say her, because it was to me, clearly an old woman. But when our eyes met...it was the scariest thing to happen to me, bad enough that I never forgot the experience and even now, some 20 years later, it still stands the hair up on my arms....
I cannot describe the eyes of the entity that stood at the foot of my bed and stared at me, but I felt pressed into the bed by those eyes, almost like I was being held there by strong arms. I struggled to get up, screaming now, in an obvious state of panic. Of course i woke my wife and my parents who came running into the bedroom to see what was the matter. As lights came on, the figure vanished, as if it was never there and my body relaxed.
Probably a dream...but....even today, as I said, some 20 years later, I still think of that experience often, especially as I close my eyes to go to sleep at the cottage....

I am thinking that this e-book, might be an interesting read. It might even be useful at the cottage, perhaps I might find my ghost...

I hope the ghosts remain kind...
Speaking of books - I have a challenge issued to YOU on my post today - come visit!
Some many years ago, I visited a friend that had been renting an old farmhouse within driving distance to Trent university. All there was to greet me that afternoon was a note and his German shepherd pup. He had to leave on urgent business and left instructions saying he’d be back the following day. All went well until about four in the morning. I had fallen asleep on the living room couch, and was awakened by the terrible growling of the dog as he backed up past the entrence way to the room. I was sure he was facing a prowler that I couldn’t see from the couch. I jumped up and grabbed a glass ashtray and flung it as hard as I could around the corner then followed to check my damage. There was nothing there.
The dog was still growing and the hairs where high and stiff on his neck.
There had to be something in the dark kitchen down the hall. I flick on the light and over the old gas stove was a greenish haze. (no Form or smell of gas) Instantly it vanished before my eyes, still thinking it was gas I checked the stove and found no leeks. In fact it had been converted to wood burning that summer and hadn't been used or lit. I never went back and spent the night freaked out wide awake. The pups ears constantly suggesting someting was about? My friend laughted, but did admit that he'd heard things he couldn't explain.
