I recently had a nice email from a reader, a gentleman, John, who rents a cottage year round in the Catskills in Upstate New York. Before that he had a boathouse on Fourth Lake in the Adirondacks. I am jealous.
John mentioned some items that he finds indispensable around the cottage and I thought his list was so good that I wanted to include it here for you. John likes to have on hand around his cottage the following items.
Please note, John didn’t necessarily mention the exact brand items I have linked to, that was me.
Sorel Pac Boots
All Weather Radio
Kestrel 2000 Handheld Anemometer/Personal Weather Station
First Aid Kit
Coleman One Mantle Kerosene Lantern
Nikon 7430 Monarch 8 X 42mm All Terrain Binoculars
Filson Cover Cloth Weekender Coat
SCARPA Hiking Boots
John is prepared! He also mentioned a 12 gauge shotgun, which if you are licensed, and knowledgeble about, is also a handy thing to have around. I do. I would add some candles to the list and perhaps some Potable Water Purification Tablets
Oh yes, some flashlights
and spare batteries are good to have on hand as well. I like the idea of a portable radio, the hand crank kind being the best idea I know of. I think if we do move, I imagine we will be adding an emergency backup generator
to that list as well.
The risk of losing power around the cottage is too great to be without some kind of backup, especially in winter. Many of the full time residents around us have already gotten generators.
John is trying to convince me to pack up my city life and make the move to full time cottage life, which of course is exactly in my plans. He says that, “Contrary to popular belief, you can make a living in the country if you are humble and willing to live unconventionally. And once you leave city/suburban living I promise you will never look back!”
It’s been wet and raining in the Catskills lately, the weather not exactly cooperating with outdoor living, let’s hope John gets some sunshine soon!
John, I appreciate your email, and your advice for my readers and I, keep those updates coming.
