Well the temperature is dropping and winter is here, and global warming or not, the lakes are starting to ice over. It will soon be time for things like ice fishing, snowmobiling, 4 wheeling or setting up some goose decoys on the ice in a snowstorm. (a great way to spend a day or two)
It will also be time for a winter weekend at the cottage, maybe some skating on the lake, or just a walk along the ice covered shoreline to get some exercise.
It’s also the time of year when the winter lake ice is new, and just forming, not always safe for any or all activities. In fact, in my opinion, being on ice is always a little bit of a life risking activity. But there are some things you can do to minimize that risk on your frozen lake, enjoying a great day outdoors………
A fellow outdoors blogger over at Passinthru Outdoors has posted an informative piece called that I think should be required reading for any outdoorsy person, be they hunters, ice fishermen, cottagers, skaters, off roaders etc…
The post has lots of great information and tips that will keep your next trip out on a frozen lake safe and help you be prepared in case anything goes wrong.
All of us who have some experience in the outdoors know that occasionally….stuff goes wrong, and being prepared, like a Boy Scout, is the only way to safely venture into the great outdoors, even if that outdoors is the frozen lake in front of your home or cottage.
